What Is The Most Money Won On A Slot Machine?

What's the biggest slots jackpot ever won? Who won it and when? What slot did they win it on? You'll learn all of this and more in this article.
Mega Moolah pays out €18.9 million!
For many online casino players, it’s all about having fun and enjoying playing some great games. For most, it’s more about landing some nice, big wins!

Whenever you play casino games for real money, there’s a chance, of course, that you'll end up losing. However, there’s always a chance you’ll experience a win, albeit likely a small one. Of all the different casino games out there, the ones that pay out by far the most are progressive jackpots.

Most of the time you land a win, it will be in the tens, hundreds or even thousands if you’re betting enough money. With progressive jackpots, the payouts can be much larger. In fact in some cases, the payouts can be life-changing. So what is the most money won on a slot machine?

The World’s Highest Progressive Jackpot Payout

On 28th September 2018, the world record for the highest progressive jackpot was beaten. An incredibly lucky player, who’s since decided to remain anonymous, won the staggering sum of €18,915,721 playing the Mega Moolah progressive jackpot at Grand Mondial Casino on his Android smartphone.

This eight-figure was won on a bet worth just 75 cents, if you can believe it. What makes this win even more astounding is that the player had made fewer than fifty spins on the slot before landing the huge win.

Other High Payouts

If you look at the list of the top ten progressive jackpot payouts, you’ll notice one thing: that Mega Moolah has paid out six of the biggest cash prizes in history. As well as the biggest cash prize, this slot has paid out the third, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth largest cash prizes.

The second, fourth and tenth largest were paid out by the Mega Fortune progressive jackpot by NetEnt, with the fifth largest paid by Playtech’s appropriately named Jackpot Giant.

The second largest win was paid out on 20th January, 2013 to an anonymous Finnish player at Paf Casino; they won a huge €17,860,868. They managed to hold the record for the world’s highest online casino payout for over five-and-a-half years - who knows how long it will be until the newest record is broken?

About Mega Moolah Slots

Mega Moolah is a Microgaming progressive jackpot themed on  the African Savannah. Animals such as a lion, giraffe, zebra and elephant appear as symbols on the reels, along with the card values A, K, Q, J and 10. There’s a scatter symbol that rewards you with 15 free spins whenever you land three or more on the reels; all wins during free spins are trebled.

The lion serves as the wild and substitutes for all symbols except for the scatter. If the lion’s substituting for another symbol and is part of a winning combination, the win will be doubled. While Mega Moolah is known for its huge payouts, it actually has four different progressive jackpots. Each of these is seeded at a different amount.

  • Mini Progressive - starts at 10
  • Minor Progressive - starts at 100
  • Major Progressive - starts at 10,000
  • Mega Progressive - starts at 1,000,000

During the base game, the slot’s jackpot feature can be triggered at random. The higher your bet is, the greater chance you have of triggering this feature. You simply spin a wheel that’s split into different segments. These segments come in four different colours and each one corresponds to one of the slot’s four jackpots.

As you might expect, there’s only one segment (white) for the Mega Progressive jackpot, making it the least likely one to be won. The one with the most segments and therefore the best chance of being won, is the smallest one, the Mini Progressive jackpot.

So far in 2018, Mega Moolah has paid out over €50 million, with an average payout of €7.1 million per win - this is much higher than the average payout of any other progressive jackpot slots

This is the main reason why Mega Moolah is widely regarded as the world’s top progressive jackpot. It’s available to play at many Microgaming casinos and is great fun to play, even if you don’t manage to win one of the four jackpots!

About Progressive Jackpots

Most online slots have a fixed jackpot. What this means is that there’s a limit on how much you can win. With progressive jackpots, there’s no such limit. Every time you place a wager, part of your wager gets added to the jackpot. The more people there are playing the slot and the more they wager, the more the jackpot will grow. It keeps on growing until someone’s lucky enough to win it.

Once a jackpot has been won, it either resets to zero or it resets to a set amount. As you can see above, each one of Mega Moolah’s four jackpots resets to a set amount once won. So after the anonymous player won the Mega Progressive, it would have started off again at 1,000,000.

Progressive Jackpot Networks

Some slots have their own, individual progressive jackpot that’s added whenever you play that particular slot alone. Others are part of a network. The jackpot is shared across a chain of slots and whenever you play any of the slots in that network, doesn’t matter which one it is, you’ll contribute towards the shared jackpot.

You can win the jackpot by playing any slot that’s part of the network. Generally speaking, network progressives tend to grow faster and get higher than standalone progressives. However, they also tend to have significantly lower chances of winning, especially since there are loads more players contributing towards the jackpot.

Progressive Jackpot Slot Summary

Aside from their unlimited jackpots, progressive jackpots are basically just regular video slots. They have symbols that pay out for landing in winning combinations, along with special features that can include bonus rounds, free spins, wilds and scatters, multipliers, expanding symbols and respins.

Why don’t you go ahead and play one of these jackpot slots for a shot at the big time? As the old saying goes, “If you’re not in, you can’t win.” We wish you the best of luck!
